Audio

Finding and Changing the Audio Settings and Inputs

In the Zoom room, you can access the audio settings by clicking on the up arrow in the top right corner of the mute button.

Changing the Microphone or Speaker

If you have an external microphone, speaker or headset, you can change them by selecting the one you wish to use from the list in the pop-up menu. Click on the up arrow in the top right corner of the audio button, then select the Microphone/Speaker you wish to use. If you do not see the headset, microphone, or speaker listed, try disconnecting and reconnecting it.

Audio Settings

If you need to adjust your audio settings in Zoom, you can do so in the settings window. Some musicians may need to make changes to Zoom’s default setting to optimize instrument sound.

To change your audio settings, select ‘Audio Settings’ from the pop-up menu. (Click on the up arrow in the top right corner of the mute button)

In the audio settings, you can do the following:

  • Adjust your speaker output level to make the sound louder/quieter. This is helpful if the volume is too quiet, even after adjusting your computer volume.

  • Adjust your mic output level. This is helpful to make yourself come through louder for the school if they are having trouble hearing you. An easy way to make sure your mic volume is always correct is to select ‘Automatically Adjust Microphone Volume’

Instrument Audio for Music Sessions

If some of your sound is not being picked up by Zoom, you may need to adjust your Audio Profile. By default, ’Zoom optimized audio’ is selected with high background noise cancellation and works best for presenters who are speaking.

However, some musicians may have trouble getting their instruments to play through Zoom due to the background noise suppression settings. To fix this, try the following: (if one option doesn’t work, try the next recommendation)

  1. Open the Audio Settings (Click on the up arrow in the top right corner of the audio button, then select Audio Settings from the dropdown menu)

  2. Scroll down to ‘Audio Profile’

  3. Select ‘Zoom background noise removal’, then change your background noise suppression to ‘Low’. If you do not see ‘Low’, make sure you have selected “Zoom

The ‘Original sound for musicians’ option requires the participant to enable this option in EVERY MEETING. If you choose to use this, remind the participants that they must enable it in the top right corner of the Zoom meeting after selecting it as the audio profile. Because of this extra step that is often missed, it is recommended that you use ‘Low’ background noise removal instead.

Video

Changing Video Input and Access Video Settings

To change the video input or access the video settings, click on the up arrow in the top right corner of the video button.

If the camera option does not show up here, disconnect and reconnect the camera and ensure it is turned on (If needed).

Rotating Camera (Participant's Video is Upside Down)

If a participant's video is upside down (assuming their camera itself is not upside down), the video may have been rotated in the Video settings.

  1. Go to the video settings by clicking on the up arrow in the top right corner of the video button.

  2. In the video preview box, click on the rotate button in the top right corner.
